If you are suffering from Colitis, Ulcerative Colitis, or their close cousin, Crohn’s disease, you are probably looking for relief. Colitis is inflammation of the inner lining of the colon, or large intestine. This is the part of your digestive system that absorbs water from the waste you are about to eliminate. If the colon doesn’t do its job properly, a multitude of different symptoms can arise, from constipation to diarrhea to medical conditions like Crohn’s Disease or Diverticulitis.

Colitis is an uncomfortable condition that is characterized by symptoms such as gas, bloating, cramping, abdominal pain, frequent, urgent loose bowel movements and diarrhea. You may also experience blood in the stool, the constant urge to have a bowel movement, feelings of incomplete elimination and continuous discomfort and pain.

Medical routes

1. Aminosalicylates

If you are experiencing colitis and seek standard medical treatment, your doctor will probably start by trying a prescription medicine called an aminosalicylate to reduce your symptoms and address any flare-ups. This product is a drug that contains 5-aminosalicylic acid as its active ingredient. The medical literature is clear about the fact that they don’t know why this works, but it is often effective at reducing symptoms for mild to medium colitis. However, you should be aware that your continued relief from symptoms depends on continuing to take the medication. If you stop, you’ll quickly be right back where you were. In other words, that’s not an effective solution.

If your Colitis gets worse, it may progress to Ulcerative Colitis, where the inner lining of your colon is not only inflamed, but also has ulcers (or sores) on the inside of it. Depending on how bad these sores get, you may experience increasingly bad symptoms until your condition has a constant adverse effect on the quality of your whole life. Severe Ulcerative Colitis can lead to other complications, such as skin lesions, eye problems, liver issues, chronic fatigue, anemia, depression, anxiety, joint problems, and many other symptoms and condtions as well.

The medical community will try other procedures such as these in order to get your Colitis under control:

2. Steroid medicines

Problem: Steroids mimic the effect of hormones in your body, leading to many side effects and undesirable health issues. The side effects are supposed to be smaller than the benefit you gain from the medication, but they are still there. And sometimes the side effects are greater than the benefit you gain.

3. Medicines that reduce the body’s immune response

Problem: Your immune system isn’t just a pest that needs to go away; it’s there to protect you from illness. In fact, there is nothing on the planet that is as effective at adapting to the ever-changing world of mutating viruses and bacteria than your “healthy” or normally functioning immune system. If it looks like your immune system has declined in its normal capacity to protect you it will be much better to correct the root cause of the problem and to take actions to nourish and strengthen your immune system than to take the extraordinary step to “turn it off completely” with immunosuppressant drugs.

3. Surgery

If drugs are not effective, your doctor will prescribe surgery. There are two main surgeries that are frequently performed to “cure” colitis.

  • Ileoanal anastomosis: In this surgery, some or all of your large intestine will be removed, and the end of your small intestine will be connected to the anal canal, allowing you to still expel waste in the normal way.
  • Proctocolectomy and ileostomy: In this surgery, your large intestine and rectum will be removed. The end of your small intestine will be connected to a small opening in your abdominal wall, and you’ll have to use a colostomy bag for the rest of your life to manage your waste.

These surgical procedures are considered “cures,” at least by WebMD. They state on their website, “Removal of the large intestine (colon) cures Ulcerative Colitis.” [source; accessed April 6, 2018]

It is a cure in the sense that if you don’t have a colon anymore, you certainly can’t have Colitis.

The question is, is that the kind of cure you want? Or, are you looking for a safer, less drastic solution?

What we mean by a “solution” is a safe and effective approach or program that will empower your body to heal itself by addressing the root cause areas of the problem. This approach allows the restoration of normal functioning, eventually getting off medications and getting back to a situation where you are digesting your food and eliminating waste with the organs you were born with.

Our founder, Russell Mariani, shares his own story of Ulcerative Colitis in his book, Healing Digestive Illness. The medical community didn’t have much in the way of a solution to offer him, either, so he went in search of answers on his own.

On his journey towards health and well-being, Russell educated himself and conducted experiments to see what would make a difference in his own condition. He not only succeeded in reaching the point of being symptom-free, he also discovered principles of lifestyle and nutrition that were effective in helping others to leave their Ulcerative Colitis behind—even when their case was severe and they were on the verge of having surgery.
