Thank you for purchasing this book. You have just made an important investment in your own personal health and healing journey. This investment has the ability to pay you dividends every day for the rest of your life. Make a commitment right now to read each paragraph and every page, and follow each suggestion with complete attention to every detail. You will not fail. You will succeed in taking the steps and making the changes that your digestive system requires of you; so that your own digestive system inside your own body will heal itself. Teaching people how to cooperate with the dynamic healing systems inside their own body is the essence of the work that I do. I have been doing this work since 1980. I am passionate about teaching others how to become more proactive in their own self-care. This book is a precise summary of the exact same program I use with my clients in my private practice. The testimonials you have already read, or will read about soon are all the result of people just like you following the program described in these pages. I did it. They did it. And so can you!

The purpose of this book is to teach you how to heal yourself from your current digestive system problems, whatever they are, and no matter how long you have been suffering. Your ability to do this depends upon your learning the basic principles and practices of what I have come to call Functional Nutrition. Functional Nutrition refers to the dietary and lifestyle habits that; when practiced consistently, have the ability to restore normal physiological functioning to the cells, organs, and systems of your body. Normal physio-logical functioning is the foundation for all physical health and the surest path to a life without dis-ease. Ultimately, Functional Nutrition is the answer to one very important question: What nourishes me best? That is to say: What nourishes you best!

The first phase of your Intestinal Regeneration Program will result in the relief from whatever troubling symptoms you are currently experiencing. The second phase will be to physically rebuild your digestive system: cell by cell, section by section until you are able to digest, absorb, assimilate, and eliminate a wide variety of foods and beverages with optimum comfort and ease. The third and final phase of your Intestinal Regeneration Program will find you experiencing a level of health and vitality you may never have experienced before. The best way to describe this level of health is: the experience of total dietary freedom.

I want you to be free to eat whatever you want to eat whenever you want to eat it.
Imagine that.

There are three kinds of knowledge. What you need to know. What is nice to know. And What is nuts to know. (That is, as it relates to your desire to get well as soon as possible.)

This book is filled with need to know information so that you can take the steps and make the necessary changes that will produce intestinal regeneration in your own body. As this happens, the digestive system problems you are currently suffering from will gradually and sometimes rapidly disappear. It will be totally up to you whether you invite them back to ruin your life again or not. Health is a choice. Your health is a direct result of all your choices but especially your choices about what to eat and drink; and when and where and how and why, as you are about to discover. (Or re-discover!)

Your body wants to be healthy. Your body is genetically programmed to be healthy. Your body has the capacity to regenerate and heal and then remain healthy and disease free, but to do so, it requires your conscious and consistent cooperation. The need to know information in this book will show you exactly how to cooperate with the dynamic self-healing mechanisms inside your own body; inside your own digestive system. There is no one single magic bullet that produces such fantastic results. Healing is the result of consistently making the choices that nourish and activate the amazing self-healing capacities waiting patiently inside every one of our 100 trillion-plus cells.

Since 1980, I have helped thousands of people with digestive system problems to learn the dietary and lifestyle habits that result in better digestive system functioning, and in most cases, a rapid return to overall health and well-being. I have a master’s degree in Functional Nutrition and Nutrition Counseling. I am pursuing a PhD in the area of gastro-intestinal health. I regularly receive patient referrals from area hospitals and clinics. I specialize in difficult to solve digestive system problems. I want to make something very clear to you and I don’t want you to take it the wrong way. You are unique and special but your digestive system problems are not. They may seem unique and special to you. You may have been told that they are unique and special. You may even have been told that your digestive system problems are incurable. You have probably been told that the cause of your digestive system problem is unknown. I was told these same things thirty years ago. I hear it from new clients every single day. It amazes me and concerns me that such misinformation exists. It just isn’t true.

What’s true is that your digestive system and my digestive system and Aunt Polly’s digestive system are basically all the same digestive system: the same anatomical parts and pieces governed and regulated by the same biological laws subject to the same physiological and biochemical dynamics controlled by and determined by the very same dietary and lifestyle habits and influences. The cause of your digestive system problems will be found in your dietary and lifestyle choices. Not genetics. Not some hidden, obscure, mysterious, past-life, alien, other-worldly, or otherwise inexplicable cause.
Page 11

The root causes of all digestive system problems are: dehydration, nutritional deficiencies, nutritional excess, dysbiosis, and stress. Let me explain each root cause in some detail.
Page 16

75% of the physical structure of the human body is water. 65% to 85% of the physical structure of every cell in our body is water. Our blood is mostly water; our brain cells, mostly water. Water, as the major component of each and every bodily fluid carries nutrients (including oxygen) to our 100 trillion-plus cells, and carries away metabolic waste. Our digestive system needs lots of water to properly process and effectively eliminate our fecal waste matter. Chronic unintentional dehydration is one of the root causes of constipation, and almost every other malfunction in the body as well.
Page 16

Why aren’t we getting the micronutrients we need? We eat too many processed foods.
We eat too much snack food, junk food, chips, candy, and chocolate bars. We drink too much soda, coffee, tea, beer, wine, and other alcoholic beverages. We don’t drink enough water. We eat too many foods made from the flour milled from whole grains and not the whole grains themselves. Bread, muffins, pastries, donuts, chips, pretzels, cookies, cakes, pies, cereals, pasta are all processed foods made from refined and processed grains. We eat too many processed luncheon meats. We eat too many processed breakfast cereals. We eat too many previously prepared foods. We eat too many frozen and bottled and canned foods and not enough fresh foods. We do not eat enough whole foods.
Page 19

Ninety-nine percent of all the world’s bacteria is helpful and beneficial to life in general and human beings in particular. Over 400 individual strains of beneficial bacteria have so far been identified as useful inhabitants of the human digestive system. Imagine that.
Page 21

Our bodies cannot function normally if we are suffering from micro-nutrient deficiencies. Our bodies cannot function normally if we overwork our digestive system by eating too much and eating too fast. Our bodies cannot function normally if we are dehydrated. Our bodies cannot function normally if we are suffering from intestinal dysbiosis. Our bodies cannot function normally if toxic chemicals and other toxic substances in the environment are finding their way into our cells through our food, water, and air supplies.

I healed myself from a variety of digestive system disorders. I healed myself from a 25 year history of panic disorders, anxiety attacks, and periodic bouts of severe, acute clinical depression. I healed myself from these disorders without the use of any pharmaceutical medications or surgical procedures. I healed myself with the proper use of simple whole foods, cellular detoxification and cleansing strategies, effective nutritional supplements, and proper daily hydration. I am writing this book to teach you how to do the same thing, if you want to! I am writing this book to teach you how to become more proactive in your own self-care. I believe that you will be able to heal yourself from whatever digestive system problem you may be currently suffering. Imagine that.

The human body is a marvelously designed living organism with the ability to grow, regulate, repair, and defend itself when given organic quality, full spectrum, whole food nutrition. This means that: A well-nourished body doesn’t make mistakes. A well-nourished body is capable of protecting itself from sickness and disease and fully capable of producing all the symptoms of health: energy, flexibility, creativity, optimism, compassion, laughter, cooperation, vision, wisdom, and more. Creating a well-nourished body requires our personal commitment to self-healing, our conscious attention to the details in our diet and lifestyle, and our proactive participation in the habits that nourish us best. I call this approach to health, Functional Nutrition. Here’s how it works:
Page 25

The purpose of our work together in the days and weeks ahead is to learn what habits and influences in our diet and lifestyle have caused the gaps in our own biological foundation to occur, and then to take the corrective actions to restore them. By doing this we will make our biological foundations healthy and strong and whole again. This is the purpose of the Functional Nutrition approach to health. This is the program of intestinal regeneration described in this book.
Page 28

Homeostasis is the miracle of balance and harmony that exists inside every cell, tissue, organ and system of the human body. Homeostasis is the natural intelligence within our own body that knows exactly what to do, to get us well and keep us well. Homeostasis is most evident, most inspiring and perhaps, most astonishing when we observe the inner workings of our little cellular factories: our cells.
Page 28

Our job is to cooperate with the miraculous cells inside our own body and to do the things that nourish us best. The principle of homeostasis teaches us that nothing is neutral. Everything we do, eat, drink, think, and say is either complementary to our homeostasis and health, or it is insulting, and actively destructive to our health. I repeat: nothing is neutral. Everything is either complementary or insulting to the proper care, design, and function of the human body. Knowing the difference between which influences in our lives are complementary and which influences are insulting is one of the most important things we will ever learn.
Page 29

Being proactive is a cornerstone of the Functional Nutrition paradigm. Functional Nutrition is a reference to the foods, supplements, and habits that, working together, restore normal physiological functions in our body. This results in the experience of vitality, energy, and health. Functional Nutrition reminds us that no one will ever know your own body better than you. Being proactive means that we live our lives in a constant spirit of experimentation and choice; learning by doing. What we need to learn are the complementary habits that nourish us best. What we need to do is to practice them consistently and gradually, master them. Health is the result of this exciting and never-ending process. Your successful Intestinal Regeneration Program depends upon your understanding of and your commitment to this transformational educational process.
